SENIOR CONSULTANT – Social Performance (Resettlement/Impact)

ERM is looking for a motivated Senior Consultant to join its Capital Project Delivery team in either Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Consultant joining our team, your key focus will be on helping our clients to define and implement strategies for social performance management. For this role, experience in the social performance, particularly in the field of resettlement and livelihood restoration, social impact assessment and social due diligence; as well as pan African project experience will be very valuable. Technically, the consultant should have experience in some or all of the following areas, for example:

  • Resettlement and livelihood restoration planning and implementation
  • Social impact assessment and measurement
  • Social due diligence
  • Social management system design, implementation and maintenance
  • Stakeholder engagement planning / consultation coordination
  • Community / socio-economic development planning
  • Management of typical stakeholder impacts, e.g. influx management, social closure, conflict management, community health & safety, vulnerability and human rights
  • Social Performance training preparation and delivery
  • Monitoring & evaluation

As a Senior Consultant within the team, you will be responsible for:

  • Managing or coordinating small or medium size projects or whole elements of larger multidisciplinary or global projects – as ERM works closely with some of the world’s largest organisations, we anticipate that this role will require close collaboration with our regional and global social performance teams.
  • Work activities are likely to include resettlement and livelihood restoration planning, social impact/baseline assessment, social due diligence, social management planning (i.e. influx, labour, community health and safety) as well as stakeholder engagement planning.
  • Delivering multiple project tasks or components, including proposals
  • Supervising project team(s) and coaching and mentoring more junior staff
  • Understanding the interrelationships between ERM services and policies and how these are applied within the clients’ business model
  • Establishing strong working relationships with clients through project delivery
  • Supporting the development and growth of social performance practice service in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Advising our key local, regional and global clients and finding solutions for their ESG and climate change related challenges
  • Making use of effective working relationships with business unit and participate in global technical communities to ensure strong network of resources
  • Remaining up to date with external market and client industry trends
  • Sharing expertise and knowledge within the business unit and/or global practice area
  • Understanding how work of the project team and or practice community contributes to ERM’s success

You will be part of our interdisciplinary and international team and will collaborate with ERM offices in the across the global business; particularly across the Europe, Middle East, Africa region as we grow and strengthen our social delivery team. Requirements

  • Postgraduate degree (preferably a Master’s-level degree) in a relevant discipline (i.e. Social science, Human rights, Geography, International/ Socio-economic Development, Anthropology).
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in Social Performance Consulting.
  • Strong technical social performance experience linking to priority sectors including energy, infrastructure and extractives.
  • Understanding of relevant international E&S Safeguards and Standards, i.e. IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles, UN Voluntary Principles.
  • Commercial acumen, business development and project management skills
  • Commitment to excellence, and to health and safety
  • Excellent leadership and communication (both verbal and written) skills
  • Fluent in English, capable of excellent written reporting.
  • Experience with using data and technology to solve clients social performance challenges
  • Willingness to travel regionally
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Language capabilities in French, Portuguese or other sub-Saharan African languages is not compulsory, but certainly an advantage to the applying candidate.
  • This is a full time staff role, subject to a six month probationary period.
