Job Description/ Main Purpose

We are looking for a creative graphic web design (website development) and digital marketing expert (Remote due to COVID-19 pandemic) for Tanzania Healthcare and Ecosystem Restoration Organization (TZ – HERO), a not-for-profit organization. TZ-HERO needs volunteers who are expert in creating websites to help them create and organize a website. Right now, they don't have a website because they can't afford to pay someone to create it but they have created some information already within Microsoft Publisher.

In Tanzania to pay someone to construct a website would cost about 500 USD to 600 USD. If the TZ-HERO was able to obtain that amount of money it would have to be spent on more crucial items such as food, medicines or other awful necessities needed for the children. A good Samaritan volunteer with expertise in creating and designing a website for them would make a huge impact on the TZ-HERO and bring them to the next level of modern development.

To get this work done a web design volunteer would first need to familiarize his/herself about the TZ-HERO in order to gather correct and informative data to go on the website. The volunteer would also need to obtain photos of the TZ-HERO and the children in order to stimulate more interest to their site. We are familiar with WordPress however, if you know another Content Management System (CMS), you are welcome to apply and teach our staff how to add content and maintain the websites. You need to have an all-round understanding of web technologies such as PHP, HML5, CSS3 and JavaScript as well as have a basic understanding of visual design such as colour, font and layout.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the CEO to understand the requirements and keep him updated on progress
  • Produce sample page layouts, known as ‘wireframing’
  • Receive feedback from the CEO about draft sites and make any necessary adjustments
  • Design the physical imagery, graphics and animations of new websites
  • Review inventory levels and ensure product availability
  • Choose colours and backgrounds for websites and position buttons, icons, links and photos
  • Liaise with graphic designers and copywriters
  • Ensure the ‘look’ of new websites adheres to company branding and client requirements
  • Edit and proofread text content and grammar
  • Ensure websites meet accessibility and privacy standards
  • Install security protections on websites
  • Test new websites to ensure everything is working on a variety of devices
  • Register web domain names
  • Upload new websites to a server and present clients with finished websites
  • Redesign websites and debug code
  • Work on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
  • Keep up to date with software and technology developments

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • A first degree is required. IT, computer science or engineering, website design, graphic design, visual arts graduates are best placed, but any subject is acceptable.
  • At least 3 years’ experience developing and designing websites
  • Good understanding of front-end technologies, including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery
  • Experience building user interfaces for websites and/or web applications
  • Experience designing and developing responsive design websites
  • Comfortable working with debugging tools like Firebug, Chrome inspector, etc.
  • Ability to understand CSS changes and their ramifications to ensure consistent style across platforms and browsers
  • Ability to convert comprehensive layout and wireframes into working HTML pages
  • Knowledge of how to interact with RESTful APIs and formats (JSON, XML)
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as Git, SVN, and Mercurial
  • Strong understanding of PHP back-end development
  • SEO best practice coding

Skills and Experience

·        Proficient in Photoshop, Indesign, Publisher, WIX, WordPress and other graphic design software packages

·        Proficient and confident in social media apps, functions and postings

·        Highly creative with a strong attention to detail

·        Passionate and experienced with all aspects of social media

·        Experience of Search Engine Optimization and google analytics would be advantageous

·        A busy time as we revamp our Websites and create new ones.

Once the website is done the volunteer would need to educate some of the staff on how to maintain the site. The volunteer would also need to assist the staff in seeking and obtaining continuous funds to be able to pay for the website hosting. The volunteer must be willing to contribute a little of his/her time, after returning home, to this endeavour in case further editing of the site is required and to support the staff at the TZ-HERO in this kind of work.

Volunteer Tasks Required

1.     Collect Information

The first task a web design volunteer would need to do would be to gather pertinent information about the TZ-HERO to enter into the website. This may take a while because of the language barrier as the staff don't speak fluent English and in some circumstances a translator may be needed.

2.     Take Photos

A web design volunteer would need to take a lot of photos that would go on the website and these photos would be of the children in the TZ-HERO plus the TZ-HERO itself and the surrounding area. They have no cameras at the TZ-HERO so a volunteer would need to bring his/her own camera.

3.     Website Construction

The web design volunteer after collecting all the necessary data would be expected to create and implement a website. This TZ-HERO has no computer or internet connection at the present time so the volunteer would need to have his/her own computer and for internet service either go to an internet cafe or buy a mobile internet stick.

4.     Create Social Links

It would be great if the same web design volunteer would help the TZ-HERO to have social links into their website, like the commonly used Facebook; that way they would be able to easily advertise the work they do and the funds needed to support their endeavours. We are looking for an online volunteer with experience in website development and IT project management, for Tanzania Healthcare and Ecosystems Restoration Organization (TZ-HERO) which is non-profit organizations in Tanzania. Our current website is built on Microsoft publisher (software).
