Description

Description

Jiamini Tanzania is a small non-profit that provides educational resources and comprehensive support to vulnerable children and young people in Southeastern Tanzania. With two staff currently in Newala Town, we are deeply integrated in the local community, working through the government school system to bolster the quality of education available to all students in the area. We are looking for an Operations and Grants Director to live in Newala and support our operations and to help fulfill the big aspirations we have for our small organization!

The Need

The Operations and Grants Director (OGD) will live full-time in Newala and will manage our Senior Program Officer and our Academic Officer. The OGD will provide supervision and oversight to the organization, with a focus on providing leadership in financial, administrative, and grant management issues.

What You’ll Do

Reporting to our Board Finance Director, you will work with the rest of the Jiamini Board and our two staff members to support operations tasks including financial, administrative, human resources, and compliance-related tasks. You will also lead grant writing, monitoring, and reporting. You will interface directly with some donors, sponsors, and grantors, and you will keep up our social media presence. You will support data management via Salesforce and will lead the interview process for future volunteers and/or employees. You’ll also have a chance (if interested) to support many of our day-to-day activities with students. Depending on your level of interest and your current skills, you might also help us to develop new capacity and/or help us to set the long-term strategy for the organization. Your work will be essential in achieving Jiamini's mission to provide brilliant kids with education, health, and safety, thus empowering them to support their communities.

This role is based in Newala in the Mtwara region of Tanzania and there is a house available for the OGD, though some work could be done virtually if preferred. The start date is July 1, 2023, and is negotiable.

About You

You will be a great fit for this volunteer role if you are:

  • Experienced in non-profit operations and grant and donor management
  • Passionate about the power of education to transform society, and love helping kids
  • A great communicator, able to interface successfully and positively with donors, sponsors, and grantors, as well as our staff and Board
  • Excited about trying out life in a rural, isolated town with inconsistent electricity and internet, without any other expatriates in the area
  • Organized, resourceful, self-managing, solution-oriented, and have a positive attitude
  • A collaborative worker who loves problem solving to get outstanding results
  • Understand and respect the culture of our students and families

Qualifications And Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in any field, or 6 years of equivalent working experience
  • Experience working or volunteering with an NGO or non-profit (preferred)
  • Experience working or volunteering in a rural town, for example in Peace Corps
  • Strong writing and communication skills in English
  • Good ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and in use of email
  • Creativity and drive to start new fundraising initiatives, including via social media
  • Willingness to live in Newala

About Jiamini

Jiamini started as a non-profit scholarship fund for vulnerable students and was registered in Tanzania in 2011. Four friends founded the organization with a commitment to providing support to children in need. We operate within the Tanzanian educational system to change the lives of our students, improve school facilities, and support the government in its education goals. We rely on local teachers, education officials, and our students’ families as full partners to ensure local ownership of all activities.

Our organization was founded on a core scholarship program that has since grown into working with primary and secondary schools across the Mtwara region and supporting more than 100 students each year at all stages of their education. We work closely with each of the students in our scholarship and other outreach programs. Knowing their individual academic and familial circumstances ensures we can offer support in whatever area they need.
