Description

About MECPZ
The Madrasa Early Childhood Programme - Zanzibar (MECP-Z) is an Early Childhood Development (ECD) organisation supported by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF). MECP-Z has been implementing ECD programs in Zanzibar for over 25 years and started to deliver in Tanzania mainland in 2014. Elimu Bora is an AKF and MECPZ project.

Project Background
Elimu Bora; a four-year (2017 – 2022) project funded by Comic Relief is targeting to improve access to quality pre-primary education in remote, underserved rural communities in Zanzibar and Kilwa. The project is delivered in partnership with AKF, the Government of Tanzania, and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. With technical support, the project is encouraging communities to establish and manage satellite preprimary schools using local available resources. During the four years of the project, a total of 80 preschools (40 Zanzibar, 40 Kilwa) will be established reaching more than 10,000 children in remote communities. 20 satellite preschools were opened in January 2018 and 60 opened in early 2019. The overall objective of the project is to increase access and quality of early childhood education for marginalized boys and girls in the target regions of Kilwa and Zanzibar.
Rationale
Based on the vast, remote, and rural nature of the communities that applied and were selected for the establishment or pre-schools through Elimu Bora Project, the schools require additional support to teachers and communities for example: guidance on the development, use and engagement with early childhood teaching and learning materials; support to local school management committees; support and strengthening linkages with the mother schools.
