Youth Work Intern, Tanzanian Children’s Fund

Summary: Founded by India Howell and Peter Leon Mmassy in 2004, the Rift Valley Children’s Village operates in partnership with the Tanzanian Children's Fund (TCF) and is a loving and permanent home to 100 children. RVCV is located in a remote and impoverished village in Karatu District, adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Our social workers serve as role models and mentors to 40 teenagers living at the Rift Valley Children’s Village, helping guide them in their development at a critical stage in their lives. This internship will be focused primarily on working with the adolescents of RVCV to assist and build our social work capacity. This role will provide direct support to the social work department by developing lesson plans and activities targeting our children’s core needs. All activities will be aimed to support our teenagers through formal and informal mentoring and by providing a positive intellectual, emotional, and social living environment for them to develop as good citizens and to position them for future personal, educational and professional success.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach character development lessons using resources at RVCV;
  • Assist the social work staff in developing and supervising team-building and reflective activities for all teenagers at RVCV;
  • Assist social work staff in developing, monitoring and evaluating a village-wide discipline policy:
    • Communicate all discipline-related issues and concerns to the social work staff;
    • Implement and enforce discipline policy;
    • Develop resource materials and programs relating to discipline for volunteers and staff to reference and use;
  • When possible, work to develop preventative programs pertaining to discipline;
  • Develop relationships, through counseling and mentorship, with the teenagers at RVCV under the supervision of the social work staff;
  • Live in an older kids’ house and offer supervision and support in the evenings and on weekends;
  • Work with the social work staff to supervise and plan activities for all teenagers at RVCV during school breaks, including developing, tracking, and monitoring the secondary and post-secondary school kids’ working program;
  • Conduct career and college interest surveys with secondary school students and graduates;
  • Assist kids with internship and job searches

Support Offered:

  • Full Room and Board at the Rift Valley Children’s Village, including your own bedroom and bathroom, three full meals per day, housekeeping and laundry assistance and transport to Karatu, as needed
  • Assistance with residence permit application process and scheduling of in-country transport
  • Health Clinic on site, plus emergency evacuation insurance provided through TCF
  • You will be joining a tight-knit community of locals and volunteers from around the world, committed to the mission and values of TCF, as well as a dynamic team of professionals who approach challenges with humor and find creative solutions

Schedule:

  • Tuesday – Sunday, 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM [Please note that due to the nature of this work, you may be asked to assist with RVCV activities outside of these hours]
  • Start date as soon as possible; six month to one year commitment preferred
