About the job

Watoto Africa is a voluntary, not -profit, organization. Aiming to improve the welfare of vulnerable children and to provide for their basic needs (shelter, food, clothing, education medical care, etc.) and we have 108 children in our orphanage.

Watoto Africa Orphanage was founded in 2000 by Josephat and Rosemary Kirutu, and was registered as a Tanzanian Non-Government Organization in2006 (Registration#: 14NGO/1525). The primary focus of Watoto Africa is caring for orphaned and other vulnerable children. The orphanage is currently home to 108 orphans and street children.

Watoto Africa Orphanage hopes to provide some of these children with a chance of a future. At Watoto Africa, children are provided with basic human rights including food, water, shelter, clothing, education and most importantly, love.

OUR VISSION:

To see each child in Tanzania, and Africa at large, flourish in an environment of peace, support and stability. At Watoto Africa we are dedicated to a child’s protection and development. We believe all children should be given the right to develop intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually, as well as to play and have a fun, safe childhood.

OUR MISSION.

“Watoto Africa” is dedicated to improving the quality of life of orphans and street children in Tanzania by providing a safe environment to meet their basic needs and enrich their minds and spirits.

Volunteers at Watoto Africa can help in a number of different ways depending on their skills and interests.

· The main role of the volunteers will be to teach supplementary lessons for the children at the Buswelu orphanage. The ability to speak English gives children in Tanzania a head start in life, increasing their chances of continuing education and eventually finding work.

Josephat is fluent in English, but he cannot teach the children alone. Therefore he needs the help of volunteers to extend the children’s English and mathematics skills. Volunteers are asked to assist with lessons Monday to Friday in the morning and afternoon. These classes are generally only 1 to 2 hours long.

Volunteers can also teach other important skills, such as fine and gross motor skills, sports, computers, music and singing. The children are very eager to learn.

  • Maintain children in the orphanage by giving them the necessary care and attention as their mothers would have given them. This is achieved by feeding, bathing and ensuring general cleanliness of the children.
  • Supervise day to day activities of the children in the orphanage i.e. sweeping, bathing, fetching of water
  • Keep the dormitories clean, plan extra-curricular activities, physical education, music and culture, indoor and outdoor games, morning and evening studies, organize excursions and so on.
  • Organize children for extra classes after school.
  • Organize them cultural activities such as singing, dancing, drumming etc.
  • Teach the children any subject of your choice at the in-house school.
  • Teach handicrafts, art, music, play with the children
  • Help with the income-generating activities of the home: mushroom, vegetable, fruit, cereal and livestock farming.
  • Any other activities related to children.

You will be staying at the orphanage’s ‘Volunteer House’: All volunteers stay in a self contained house, which is about a 1 minute’s walk from the orphanage. The house has four bedrooms which can accommodate up to 12 volunteers maximum. Volunteers can for themselves or have meals at the orphanage cooked by Rosemary my wife one of the best cooks that I have ever come across. We have water and electricity though sometimes there are shortages. The rooms are equipped with beds and mosquito nets

We will always pick-up our volunteer at airport in Mwanza, Bus stations in Mwanza and anywhere else he/she will arrange to be picked up.

We always advice our volunteers to have all their papers in place before coming to Tanzania.

Our work is to assist by sending all the necessary letters and invitation.

We always do our best to make the stay of our volunteers here in Tanzania and especially at the orphanage a memorable one.
