Job Summary
Power engineers operate and maintain reactors, turbines, boilers, generators, stationary engines and auxiliary equipment to generate electrical power and to provide heat, light, refrigeration and other utility services for commercial, industrial and institutional buildings and other work sites.

Job Description:
1. Designs power system facilities and equipment and coordinates construction, operation, and maintenance of electric power generating, receiving, and distribution stations, transmission lines, and distribution systems and equipment: Designs and plans layout of generating plants, transmission and distribution lines, and receiving and distribution stations.
2. Directs preparation of, or prepares drawings and specific type of equipment and materials to be used, in construction and equipment installation.
3. Estimates labor, material, construction, and equipment costs.
4. Inspects completed installations for conformance with design and equipment specifications and safety standards.
5. Observes operation of installation for conformance with operational standards.
6. Coordinates operation and maintenance activities to ensure optimum utilization of power system facilities and meet customer demands for electrical energy.
7. May compile power rates and direct others in evaluating properties and developing utilities in new territories.
8. May be designated according to type of engineering functions as Engineer, Design-And- Construction; Engineer, Operations-And-Maintenance.
9. Work in a team environment with other engineering disciplines to provide detailed electrical design and specification for the installation of the following equipment and systems:
- Electrical power distribution systems
- Switch-gear and motor control centers
- Exterior and interior lighting
- Ground support system controls and ladder logic
- Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units
- Standby and emergency generators
- Automatic transfer switches
- Power monitoring hardware and software
- Data/phone distribution and wiring
- Building and site grounding systems
- Fire alarm systems and lightning protection systems
10. Provide electrical engineering support to facility technicians to troubleshoot existing electrical equipment and controllers
11. Provide engineering support for the design, operation, and troubleshooting of all the facility electrical components and systems, including:
- Load flow analysis of electrical power distribution systems
- Electrical equipment evaluation
- Building and facility equipment grounding
- Power monitoring hardware and software
12. Ensure that all equipment interfaces properly with other mechanical and electrical systems, including compatibility with facility power budgets
13. Ensure all electrical designs and installations conform to applicable codes and regulations
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
- 7+ years of professional experience in power distribution systems, switch-gear, UPS's, and generators
