UNHCR leads efforts to protect people forced to flee wars and persecution around the world, providing life-saving aid, including shelter, food and water to ensure their basic safety, rights and dignity. With 16,803 women and men working in 134 countries, we work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of over 70 million forcibly displaced people worldwide and the communities hosting them.

It is anticipated that development responses to forced displacement will grow in significance in future years due to the greater importance attached to reducing poverty in fragile and conflict-affected settings and the need to address protracted displacement situations in a more sustainable manner.

While UNHCR's primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees, our ultimate goal is to help find durable solutions that will allow them to rebuild their lives in dignity. In the context of the Global Compact for Refugees, the role of the Development Officer is to support UNHCR's engagement and cooperation with host Governments and development agencies on their medium and long-term programmes and policy priorities. The goal, in support of the Global Compact for Refugees, is to support host governments, local communities and UNHCR’s populations of concern by leveraging development partnerships for socio-economic investments in host areas. Likewise, to influence policy dialogue to enact institutional reforms toward improved protection, resilience and solutions and work for the inclusion of refugees and other populations of concern into national services and development plans and to enhance both refugees and host community socio-economic opportunities.
