JOB DETAILS:
JOB SUMMARY
YLabs is seeking a junior-level or mid-level Communication Designer who is passionate about utilizing design to enhance the communication and impact of youth-focused projects.In this role, you will collaborate with youth-led organizations participating in the USAID Kijana Nahodha Social Impact Accelerator. Your mission will be to transform their ideas and innovations into visually compelling prototypes and pitch decks. By infusing your design expertise, you will help these organizations effectively convey their narratives, ensuring their projects resonate with stakeholders and partners. This is an opportunity to leverage your design skills to empower youth initiatives striving to create positive change in health, well-being, and economic opportunities for young people globally.
This position will be based in Tanzania but work remotely, allowing for flexibility and accessibility. The collaboration will take place over a span of six weeks, beginning in mid-October 2023 and extending into January 2024. This duration encompasses key milestones and deliverables, culminating in the successful design of prototype assets, pitch decks for the youth organizations involved, and other materials for the innovation lab.
SCOPE OF WORK
SCOPE 1: Prototype Asset Design for 5 Youth Organizations [3 weeks]
Key Milestones & Timeline:
• Participate in the in-person live prototyping workshop with the youth: Oct 23-27, 2023
• Collaborate with five youth organizations (YOs) to gather project details and branding guidelines: Oct 30, 2023
• Initiate design of prototype assets aligning with each YO’s project concept.
• Finalize design assets including wireframes, posters, brochures, and handouts.
• Return completed assets to respective youth organizations: Nov 14, 2023
Deliverables:
• 2-3 key wireframes (screens) for each YO’s prototype.
• Posters, brochures, and handouts for each organization’s project.
• Branding design elements (mood boards, color palettes, logos).
• Design assets for live prototypes and promotional materials.
SCOPE 2: Communication Design for the Innovation Lab [3 weeks]
Key Milestones & Timeline:
• Collect necessary materials from five youth organizations (YOs) for pitch deck design: Dec 18, 2023
• Create visually appealing and coherent design elements for the pitch decks.
• Finalize design materials including pitch decks and other needed materials for the innovation lab.
• Return designed decks and innovation lab materials to the respective youth organizations: Jan 13, 2024
Deliverables:
• 5 uniquely designed pitch decks effectively conveying each organization’s project message and branding.
• Design assets aligning with each organization’s branding guidelines and project concepts.
• Other print design materials needed for the innovation lab (worksheets, posters etc.)

YOU HAVE:
• 2+ years of experience in graphic design or communication design
• Strong graphic design skills particularly in layout, presentations, branding and visualization of systems and complex information and structures
• Strong knowledge of design platforms like Adobe Creative Suite, design techniques, software, data visualization
• Experience in creating and/or managing brands
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with colleagues, clients, and beneficiaries
• Experience in print production
DESIRABLE:
• Expertise in human-centered design / design thinking
• Experience in print, digital, UX/UI design, data visualization
• Experience in and enthusiasm for managing interns or junior designers
• Experience in illustration and drawing concepts
• Previous experience working on health, education or employment programs
• Worked or lived in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia or Central America
• Proficient with basic visual and/or UX/UI design tools to create mid-fidelity mockups
• Strong interest in working with young people
