Description

Service Management Group (SMG) is seeking a M&A savvy and private equity experienced Finance leader to serve as Chief Financial Officer. The CFO will be a key member of the senior Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and a lead business partner to the Chief Executive Officer. The CFO will develop and direct the financial plans to guide substantial growth and also ensure finance-based analysis and decision-making guide the execution in every function as SMG accelerates a transformation from tech-enabled services to a service-differentiated SaaS company, a transformation launched following the October 2021 entry of new ownership and a new CEO.

In partnership with SMG’s two PE sponsors, the CFO will spearhead an aggressive strategy for acquisition to support SMG’s drive to be the leading vertical software company in the Customer Experience management market for restaurant, retail, and similar location-centric businesses. SMG’s CFO will be responsible for the finance, accounting, and legal functions including establishing policies, procedures, reporting, and planning for the organization. The leader in this role must be a PE-caliber strategic thinker for SaaS and tech-enabled service business economics as well as a confident and compelling counselor to the CEO, each functional peer on the ELT, and to the Board.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience as a finance function leader in an expansion-stage SaaS business of $70 to $200+ million in revenue as well as experience working for PE-backed businesses. He or she will have a positive, glass-half-full approach to leadership in a company that differentiates itself from the competition with a high level of client service and multi-year client relationships created by a group of diverse and genuine associates.

From Forrester in their 2023 Wave for Customer Feedback Management platform providers: “Reference customers raved about the services for delivering actionable insights and how easy SMG is to work with.”

The CFO will contribute to the winning culture of a fully remote, zero office company with 300+ associates in 30+ countries. While SMG’s culture will be fantastic for an innovative leader operating with a global mindset and a sophisticated approach to both US and global diversity, SMG would be a poor fit for a leader longing for his or her pre-pandemic, 5-day-a-week office experience in a single city. SMG’s current ELT and extended ELT includes members in Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Tampa/St. Petersburg. Our CEO resides with his family in London, England.

Accountabilities:

Assuming overall responsibility for the financial excellence of the company, the CFO’s primary accountabilities include:

• Partner with the CEO and COO to create and implement best in class people, processes, and systems to support a high growth business with a strategy for consistent organic growth and revenue-accelerating tuck-in acquisitions.

• Provide financial leadership to the business as the company scales cost-effectively.

o Oversee the production and review of weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting metrics (i.e. KPIs, financial statements, financial health measures, etc.) to be shared with the ELT and Board of Directors.

o Produce forward looking, predictive financial models to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans – help the CEO and ELT see around the corner, not just scoreboard past performance.

o Work closely with the various functions of the business to ensure proper pricing, forecasting, revenue and operational expense analysis.

• Spearhead M&A for what both PE owners expect to be an acquisitive platform company within their respective portfolios.

o Partner with the CEO and Board in strategy development, target identification and financial performance analysis.

o Partner with the COO in driving integration and consolidation.

o Lead target relationship development and engagement.

• Ensure an effective financial controls and compliance governance environment.

o Proactively monitor and report progress.

o Ensure successful completion of necessary audits and high quality audited financial statements.

o Ensure PE-centric risk management objectives are achieved with documented policies implemented.

o Manage our banking and lender relationships ensuring smooth and positive partnerships.

• Lead an effective and scalable Legal function that leans to simplification and speed.

o Lead strategic, enterprise client contracting with some of the most iconic brands in the world.

o Ensure scalable commercial contracting for a higher velocity mid-market business.

o Balance speed and agility with PE-grade expectations for managing risk and contracting across vendors, partners, employees, and contractors.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration, CPA and/or MBA preferred.

• Hands-on SVP Finance or CFO experience in growth oriented, recurring revenue software businesses that have undergone significant transformation/consolidation.

• Recent growth-stage executive leadership in a Private Equity backed company.

• 15+ years of demonstrable, progressive success as a financial leader.

• Significant experience defining and operationalizing financial strategies.

• Strong M&A execution and integration experience.

• Proven history of managing the financial and operational expansion of a business.

• Senior management experience including Board of Directors and C-Level interaction.

• Prior success upgrading the quality of an organization’s financial infrastructure, including processes and systems, to improve budgeting, planning, reporting and internal controls.

• Strategic thinker with exceptional technical skills, analytical ability, superb judgment, and strong understanding of software business operations.

• Motivated to join an entrepreneurial team of smart, driven people.
