APOPO is currently seeking an inquisitive and motivated researcher to join our team conducting basic and applied behavioral research relevant to the scent detection abilities of the African Giant Pouched Rat (Cricetomys ansorgei).

Who are we?

APOPO is an award-winning global non-profit organization that applies rat scent detection technology to address global social issues, including training rats to sniff out landmines and tuberculosis (TB). APOPO’s training and research headquarters are situated in partnership with the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Who are we looking for?

APOPO is currently seeking inquisitive and motivated researchers to join our team conducting basic and applied behavioral research relevant to the scent detection abilities of the African Giant Pouched Rat (Cricetomys ansorgei).

Candidates should hold a PhD in a related field of science (such as, psychology, neuroscience, biology, or anthropology) and have experience conducting behavioral research. Keen attention to detail and a solid track record of original scientific research are required. Candidates with prior experience examining olfactory learning or discrimination behavior in rodents, applied knowledge of animal health and welfare, and/or experience supervising and mentoring are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will work closely with APOPO’s training and innovation teams at our headquarters in Morogoro, Tanzania where opportunities for research related to our ongoing operations in landmine and TB detection also exist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct behavioral research with African giant pouched rats;
  • Research and develop new scent detection applications;
  • Support and collaborate with APOPO’s landmine and TB-detection programs;
  • Prepare and submit scientific manuscripts and grant proposals;
  • Build local capacity through mentoring and conducting skills training seminars.
