Assistant Secondary Librarian

Role Reports to: Head of Secondary
The Secondary Librarian is responsible for the Secondary Library and any assistants working in the library.
Job Description:
The Secondary Librarian is expected to:
● Promote and contribute to the school's aims (mission, vision, values, policies).
● Promote a positive school culture which is happy, purposeful and productive.
● Work within the School Improvement, Operational and Strategic Plans (establish priorities and targets for their area and monitor the progress).
● Promote a reading and research culture.
● Develop a vibrant and stimulating library learning environment.
● Encourage high standards in all aspects of school life.
● Encourage consultation and discussion with staff.
● Liaise effectively between teachers and students.
● Order and maintain the library resources.
● Undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required.
Responsibilities:
The Secondary Librarian will:
● Organise and run the day to day operations of the library.
● Encourage the active participation of teachers and students in accessing all the facilities and resources available in the school’s library.
● Promote the use of the library to the school community and foster an atmosphere which is conducive to positive learning experiences for users. This will include ensuring a high standard of display and promotional material.
● Organise internal and external events and programmes to promote reading - peer reading programmes, guided reading sessions, book clubs, book events, author visits, book fairs and exhibitions in consultation with school management.
● Be up to date with the school curricula through liaison with Curriculum Coordinators in order to develop and recommend the introduction of new facilities, resources, technologies and working practices to meet the developing needs of all library users.
● Select, acquire, purchase and organise learning resources in all formats which support the curriculum and learning and teaching in consultation with other teaching staff.
● Help with Academic Honesty and other areas of the Secondary programme.
● Initiate ideas for inclusion in plans for the library development.
● Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the service provided by the library and implement changes, where necessary, to meet new priorities in conjunction with other staff.
● Index, catalogue and classify learning resources in the library and develop and maintain accurate and reliable catalogue and lending systems.
● Contribute to the development and promotion of the use of relevant ICT applications to support learning and teaching in the library, including CD - Rom, on-line database, E-Mail and Internet, and keep abreast of ICT initiatives which have an impact on the delivery of a school library.
● Prepare and present budget proposals to access funding to take forward development of the school’s library.
● Be responsible for the preparation and presentation of an annual report on the operation and effectiveness of the library.
● Take responsibility for personal and professional development in keeping up to date with new facilities and technologies relevant to the library.
● Develop and maintain links with external agencies and sources to maximise the use of appropriate materials and information for the library, including public libraries, museums etc.

Experience & Qualification:
● Bachelor degree of Education in English, humanities or related field
● Minimum 2 years of librarian experience (desirable).
● Knowledge of IGCSE (desirable).
● Knowledge of A-Levels (desirable).
● Experience of working in a school environment.
