Reports to: CEO
Location: Unguja, Zanzibar
Salary range: TZS 7,000,000 – 8,500,000 gross per month
Background
Health Improvement Project Zanzibar (HIPZ) is a UK founded, locally rooted not-for-profit organization. Our mission is for everyone living in Zanzibar to have easy access to safe quality healthcare. Since 2006 HIPZ has been strengthening the healthcare system in Zanzibar in partnership with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (RGoZ) to achieve Universal Health Coverage. From the grassroots to the government, HIPZ is embedded in every level of the health care system in Zanzibar, and we are a catalyst for positive change.
About the role
Following a period of considerable growth, HIPZ is now embarking on an exciting new chapter towards long-term partnerships and grants from foundations and bilateral donors as well as developing new income streams. We are now seeking a full-time Fundraising and Development Director, based in Zanzibar, to lead our Fundraising Team. We are looking for a talented and inspiring Fundraising and Development Director to lead the Fundraising Team to achieve 7 figure targets. The Fundraising and Development Director will work closely with the CEO, Programme and Finance Teams to help HIPZ and play a proactive role in the HIPZ Senior Management Team.
The Fundraising and Development Director will lead the review and implementation of our Fundraising Strategy, line manage and support our Fundraising Team.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and leadership (35% Level of Effort)
- Lead a review of the HIPZ Fundraising Strategy
- Line management responsibility for the Fundraising Manager, and Partnerships Manager. Provide leadership and support the team in achieving their individual key performance indicators. Support the Fundraising Team in implementing the fundraising strategy, including the delivery of income streams such as the Elective Student Programme, events and campaigns.
- Support the effective communication between Fundraising, Finance and Programme teams.
- Serve as the Secretariat to the Fundraising and External Engagement Committee.
- Perform duties as a member of the Senior Management Team as required.
- Oversee the implementation of the stewardship plan.
Institutional funding, grants and trusts (35% Level of Effort)
- Proactively identify ways to broaden and strengthen our network of partners that are aligned with our mission and programmes to foster successful collaborations.
- Maintain and develop a robust pipeline of funding opportunities.
- Coordinate the development of grant proposals by working together with the Programme Team, Finance Team and the CEO.
- Support due diligence processes and management of donor contracts.
- Oversee effective systems for reporting in close collaboration with the Programmes Team and the Finance Team to ensure all donor reporting requirements are met.
Corporate, Major Donors and Communications (30% Level of Effort)
- Identify and grow our network of partners aligned with our programmes, with a view of creating successful fundraising partnerships.
- Oversee the implementation of stewardship plans.
- Support the fundraising team in individual giving and major donor management.
- provide leadership to strengthen HIPZ marketing and communications.
Person Specification
Essential Skills, Qualifications & Experience:
- Graduate level with at least 5 years' experience in fundraising
- At least 3 years' experience in the health sector
- Experience in leading institutional, grants and trust or corporate fundraising teams
- Experience in leading the development of fundraising strategies
- Proven track record in securing and managing USD 500,000 grants and partnerships
- Knowledge of project management tools including Logical Frameworks, Theory of Change, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, budget management.
- Excellent cross-cultural interpersonal and networking skills and experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, with demonstrable ability in gathering and assimilating facts and data from various sources
- Excellent written English communication skills
- Strong leadership experience
- Excellent existing network of individual, corporate, trust and statutory contacts
- Demonstrated experience in working effectively across different cultural contexts, especially in African or low-resource settings.
Desirable Skills, Qualifications & Experience:
- Proficiency in design tools such as InDesign, Canva
- Postgraduate degree in relevant field
- Working proficiency in Kiswahili
- Working experience in East Africa
