Job Summary:
A Panel Beater is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in repairing the bodywork of vehicles. They work primarily with cars, trucks, and other vehicles to restore them to their original condition after accidents, wear, or damage. Panel beaters use a variety of tools and techniques to straighten and repair vehicle panels, remove dents, and replace damaged parts. Their tasks often involve using hand tools, power tools, and sometimes welding equipment to ensure the vehicle’s exterior is smooth, aligned, and properly restored. The role requires both manual dexterity and a keen eye for detail.
Duties and responsibilities of panel beater.
- Assessing vehicles for damage and providing quotes and insurance reports.
- Removing damaged parts.
- Using specialist tools and machinery e.g. Hydraulic, gas equipment and pneumatic saws.
- Straightening damaged panel or creating new ones.
- Filling holes and hammering dents out of panel.
- Spraying panels with paint to match the colour.
- Normal colour vision.
- Physically able to operate machinery and tools as required.
- Attend scheduled preventive maintenance as per company recommendations and guidelines.
- Ensure the working environment is clean and safe.
Skills Required:
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with a wide range of tools (e.g., welding equipment, grinders, sanding tools, frame-straightening machines).
- Experience in panel repair, metalworking, and finishing.
- Strong knowledge of vehicle body systems and structures.
Problem-Solving Skills:
- Ability to assess damage, determine repair requirements, and choose the best course of action.
Attention to Detail: o Precision is critical, especially when aligning or painting vehicle panels.
Physical Stamina:
- The job may require lifting heavy parts, bending, kneeling, and working in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
Communication:
- Good communication skills to explain repair processes and timelines to customers and work effectively with other team members.
Time Management:
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure to meet deadlines and customer expectations.
Qualifications
- Diploma in mechanical engineering, Automotive or any equivalent field.
- Experience as an apprentice or working in a repair shop is often required.
- 3+ years of on-the-on panel beater is beneficial to gain expertise in handling a variety of vehicle makes and models.
