Position: Assistant Beekeeper
Location: Ifakara – Morogoro Start date: Immediately.
OVERVIEW
Six Rivers Africa (SRA) is a non-profit organization with a mission to protect, restore, and preserve wilderness areas, and increase the wildlife population so that the flora and fauna can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Six Rivers Africa looking for an Assistant Beekeeper to perform tasks that will support our beekeeping project initiatives.
JOB PURPOSE
The Assistant Beekeeper is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the bees by monitoring hive health, controlling pests and diseases, and harvesting honey. The ideal candidate should possess a basic understanding of bee behaviour, biology, and ecology, along with a passion for beekeeping, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and a willingness to work outdoors. This hands-on role involves supporting the Head Beekeeper in maintaining bee colonies and contributing to the overall health of the apiary.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Implementation of the Bee-keeping plan
• Participate in the identification of beehive Shepherd from the local community.
• Conduct all training and guidance of the Shepherds, with the assistance of the Manager
• Oversee that the hives are managed according to the guidelines
• Act as a mentor for the Shepherds, encouraging skill set development
• Perform maintenance where necessary
• Harvest the honey from beehives
• Keep daily/weekly records of activities/information flow and data collection
• Weekly reporting to the bee manager and assisting in the development of project progress reports as required.
REQUIREMENTS
• Education: High school diploma, certificate or equivalent in Botany or Zoology, Environmental studies, Wildlife management.
• Any beekeeping training or certification is a plus.
• Experience: Prior experience with beekeeping is preferred.
• Physical Ability: Ability to lift heavy hive boxes, walking in fields, stand for long periods, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Skills: Strong observational skills, attention to detail, basic mechanical skills for equipment handling, and a calm demeanour around bees.
• Work Environment: Must be comfortable working in protective gear and managing bee stings if allergic responses are not a concern
• Ability to work independently
