At Digital Science we’re well positioned to become a provider of AI solutions for the research community - focusing on the trustworthiness of the results and combining the structured data available through years of investment into data and enrichments. Providing AI services based on our own infrastructure allows us to focus on the reliability and ethical use of AI, and can differentiate us from the ‘brute force’ of the general models and infrastructure. We’re building a new AI Solutions Development team, who will sit in the Central Technology function.

Your new role

Join our pioneering technology company, Digital Science, and contribute to our vision of creating a more open, efficient, and effective research ecosystem. As a Senior Frontend Software Engineer, you will be an integral part of our AI Solutions Development team within the Central Technology function. Your role will focus on developing user-friendly and responsive frontend interfaces that seamlessly integrate with backend APIs, contributing to the development of AI functionalities that can be incorporated into various Digital Science products. Candidates with backend development skills are highly valued for their ability to support broader team objectives.

What you’ll be doing

• Develop user-friendly, responsive, and accessible frontend interfaces.
• Collaborate with UX/UI designers to translate designs into functional user interfaces.
• Ensure cross-browser compatibility and optimize application for maximum speed and scalability.
• Integrate APIs and backend services with the frontend applications, understanding backend constraints and capabilities.
• Write clean, scalable, and efficient code with emphasis on security and data protection.
• Conduct unit and end-to-end testing of frontend components to ensure robustness and reliability.
• Participate in code reviews, maintain version control, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our development practices.
• Assist in the design, development and maintenance of the component library.
• Occasionally assist in backend development tasks to ensure seamless integration and functionality.

What you’ll bring to the role

Essential

• Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Extensive experience with NextJS and React.
• Understanding of UI/UX design principles and responsive design.
• Experience with frontend testing tools and frameworks (e.g., Jest, Cypress).
• Strong ability to integrate APIs and various backend services into frontend applications.
• Experience in optimizing the loading and performance of web applications.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
• Proven ability to manage workload and priorities independently.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills, capable of working closely with cross-functional teams.
• Basic familiarity with backend development environments, including an understanding of server-side languages and database management.

Desired

• Eagerness to learn and develop AI and technical skills in a dynamic work environment.
• Background in Python
• Knowledge of the required libraries (Hugging Face Transformers, PyTorch)
• Knowledge of backend technologies is a plus, including familiarity with server-side programming languages and frameworks.
